The Hawthorne Legacy (chapters 7-8) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
In this part of the story, Xander Hawthorne (left) and Avery Grambs (right) are about to knock down a wall to find a closed off room, in hopes of finding clues to a mystery they're trying to solve. Xander Hawthorne and his brothers are trying to figure out why Avery inherited all of their grandfather's money, and they think this room, which was their grandfather's son's, has a clue.
Now, Xander's brother Jameson came, wanting to help knock down the wall, but Xander wanted to do it himself, even though he is the least competitive of him and his brothers, and they see it as a race to solve the mystery.
This dialogue is important because the Hawthorne brothers thought that their grandfather's son was dead, but it is now revealed that he is alive. They now know that in order to solve the mystery they have to find him.
"Xander, your uncle and I know each other. I met Toby right after my mother died."
Xander is now breaking down the wall with his hammer, wanting to find clues in his uncle's old room.
The wall to the room came down very easily, almost like it had been built for someone to tear it down. This brings many questions, like why did Toby Hawthorne cover up his death, and why didn't his father try to find him, and did they want someone to eventually discover this?
This man is Mr. Laughlin, a groundskeeper at the Hawthornes' house. He was very upset by them being in this room, which brings the question of what was his connection to Toby Hawthorne?
"What are you kids doing in here?"
