  • Alka Kumar, my mom, was born on January 11, 1973 in Varanasi India. Her family included her mom, dad, older sister of 8 years, older brother for 4 years, and another older brother of 2 years.

  • An important family tradition was the celebration of Holi. Holi is the Hindu Celebration of Color, in which people throw colors at each other. My mom's family would celebrate by throwing color and also having a big meal. It was something that my mom remembers doing every year with all her relatives and friends.
  • One of my mom's favorite childhood celebrations was Makar Sankranti, which celebrates the sun. The kids would all go to the roof and fly kites while trying to also cut the string of other kid's kites.
  • Some of my mom's earliest memories were going to school and learning. She remembers most fondly playing with the other children in her class. However, she also remembers how much she loved learning. As a child, she learned both English and Hindi, which helped her as she moved around the world.
  •  An important family history story is about my great great grandmother. After her husband got sick, she continued to run the lands along with her house. This story was told to my mom by my grandmother, and to my sister and me by my mom.

  • My mom lived in India until she was 24. As time went on, her older sister got married. My mom and her brothers continued school. She got a Masters in Psychology. My mom also got a dog when she was in her 20's named Tommy.
