In 499 BCE, some Greek cites which were under Persian rule revolted against the Persia. The Greeks wanted to help them so they sent soldiers there to help them. This made Darius mad so he wanted revenge.
The Crowning of Xerxes
The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC during the first Persian invasion of Greece. It was fought between the citizens of Athens, aided by Plataea, and a Persian force commanded by Datis and Artaphernes. The battle was the culmination of the first attempt by Persia, under King Darius I, to control Greece.

The Battle of Thermopylae was fought between an alliance of Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas I of Sparta, and the Persian Empire of Xerxes I. It was fought over the course of three days, during the second Persian invasion of Greece.
The Ending
When Xerxes's father (Darius) died, he still had anger even though they won the recent battle which passed down with the throne. Xerxes was ready for the next battle.
The Persians Got cocky and got tricked because they thought the Athenians were surrendering but they had a navy in defense.
The Persian War ended with the Peace of Callias of 449, but by this time, and as a result of actions taken in Persian war battles, Athens had developed her own empire. Conflict mounted between the Athenians and the allies of Sparta
