  • The first stage of Eriksons stages of psychological development is Trust vs. Mistrust, this is when the infant can develop trust with their caregiver through consistent love and care. As seen in the image, the infant may build trust with their parents as they are providing care to the child by giving the necessary nutrients.
  • The second stage of Eriksons stages of psychological development is Autonomy vs. Shame/ Doubt. This stage is when the toddler will develop confidence in their ability to care for themselves (autonomy) when received encouragement. For example, here the toddler discovers on her own what she enjoyed doing and in return received encouragement from her mother.
  • The fifth stage of Eriksons stages of psychological development is Identity vs. Role Confusion. This is when adolescents may try different roles, including rebellion in search of their identity as they work through who they are. This image portrays the adolescent going through role confusion as they are unable to determine a sense of who they are or which direction they would like to follow for college applications.
