- This is how it was made (According to Maori legend)
- The matariki stars are a star cluster that come out every year and symbolize the Maori new year
- Long ago Ranginui and Papatuanuku stayed together which made the world dark.
- Rangi and Papa's children got sick of their lives in the dark, so they had a meeting to decide what they will do.
- We need to kill them! If we do we can leave and do whatever we want!
- We don't have to kill them! I will separate them so we may leave and there will be light
- They're our parents we can't do that to them!
- After the meeting Tanemahuta the God of the forest separated his parents despite of Tawhirimatea's protest against it
- Tawhirimatea never forgave his brothers for separating his parents. To show a sign of his pain and anger he ripped his eyes out and threw them into the heavens.
- His eyes became the stars of matariki. And are now a symbol of the Maori new year
