  • Many rabbit offspring are produced that show variations in fur color - from white, tan/brown, to gray.  These variations are caused by differences in the rabbits' DNA - from mutations or recombination of genes during sexual reproduction or crossing over.
  • Because so many offspring are produced, not all of them will survive.  They will compete for resources and have to escape from predators.
  • Since the environment is snow-covered, and contains gray rocks and trees, it is harder for the predators to see the white and gray rabbits.  The tan and brown rabbits stick out, though, so they are eaten more often.
  • Survival of the fittest...Having gray or white fur is an adaptation that increases the chances of survival.  Since more gray and white rabbits survive, they live longer and are able to reproduce more leading to more gray and white rabbits in the population.
