The story takes place in the capital city of Argentina, Buenos Aires. The narrator and his sister, Irene, live in this old ancestral house. They are upper-class people who get their earnings of a farm, and both are not married. They are growing older and coming to the conclusion that they will be the last generation of the family to stay in this house.
They keep each day busy by doing chores around the house since there is so much dust. Irene likes to spend time knitting and the narrator passes his day by watching her. The two have lunch at the same time everyday and rarely go out of the house.

One day while the narrator went to the kitchen to put water for mate, he heard some rustling sounds like a chair falling on the carpet from the back of the house. The narrator quickly locks the door and tells Irene "They´ve taken over the back part." Irene could tell what her brother meant by "They" and stops knitting, looking worried.

At night, the house is very quiet that you could hear every little noise and the narrator would wake up when Irene talks in her sleep. The tension inside the house has worsen ever since the mysterious sound has taken over part of the house.
Then one night before they went to sleep, the narrator goes to the kitchen for a glass of water. On his way, he suddenly hears the noise somewhere coming from the kitchen. Without any more hesitation, the narrator grabs Irene's hand and ran.
They ran away from the house and didn't have time to bring anything. There ware fifteen thousand pesos in the wardrobe but it was too late now. They had the clothes they had on and the narrator's watch. Both of them felt terrible, the narrator throws the house key into the sewer and they leave.
