While Simon Wheeler used uneducated dialect to represent Western America.The author use these characters to contrast the East from the West. The frame narrator uses words such as “hereunto” and “personage”, while Wheeler uses language such as “feller” and “thish-yer.”

Setting: The story takes place during the mid-nineteenth century at an Angel’s Mining camp in California. The Gold Mine provides social context to the famous Gold Rush of 1849 and focus of common stereotypes believed by Americans at the time. “I found Simon Wheeler dozing comfortably by the bar-room stove of the old, dilapidated tavern in the ancient mining camp of Angel's.” (paragraph 2, line 1)
Allusion : Twain compares relevant political figures to animals. By including known figures, Twain interested readers. He was also able to comment on the figures in a humorous, yet indirect manner. “Andrew Jackson which was the name of the pup” (paragraph 6, line 2)
