The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street Theme :: Fear and Suspicion are destructive in many ways
One of the major themes in ' The Monsters are Due on Maple Street ' is fear and suspicion are destructive in many ways. There are many examples of this theme throughout the story but these are my top three. The first includes when Les Goodman after so desperately tries to turn his car on and when giving up after not being successful he walked away from his car just to hear the growl of the engine start behind him. Due to that everyone jumped to conclusions without letting Les Goodman speak. They ganged up on him throwing questions at him he didn't know the answers to. One of the woman called him out by saying sometimes, when she would go to sleep late at night she would see Goodman staring at the sky, looking for something it seemed. Which cause even more even more suspicion. A second reason I chose this theme is because in this scene Charlie had spotted a figure walking to them through the darkness. . Charlie let the fear and suspicion led him a without a thought he pulled the trigger that he thought would relive some of fear he felt , but to his surprise it added more when he heard Steve call out that the dark figure was just a fellow neighbor Pete Van Horn. Lastly why I chose this theme is also because when Charlie out of fear blamed Tommy for being the alien everyone went crazy blaming one another, hitting each other, trying to find a scapegoat. With each light of a house coming on their was a new person to blame. I choose the theme Fear and suspicion are destructive in many ways because the characters tell us in many ways how they let fear and suspicion get the best of them and made them do things that regretted t5he second after they did it.
