Some historical circumstances that AIMs took part in were in 1973, they took over Wounded Knee and demanded the U.S. government to declared it the “Independent Oglala Sioux Nation. as well as review of all Indian treaties, and a U.S. Senate investigation of treatment of Native Americans in general. They have done a lot more.
Thats amazing! I need to know more. What are their goals?
Great Question! Their goals are centered around the well being of Native American communities. Like economic independence, reviving traditional cultures, protection from crazy laws made against them, and especially giving natives power over their land.
Those are some great goals.
I know it is really fascinating.
Wait, so how does religion tie into their goals and principles?
That's an interesting question. I think the role that religion played in AIMs principles and goals is that religion is a big part of native culture and Native identities. With the U.S government trying to rid Native culture they are getting rid of Native religion with it. AIMs goal is to preserve and protect the Natives in every way they can which includes their religion.
This was an amazing conversation. I learned so much about AIMs. They are a great foundation and doing a lot of great for the Native Americans. I definetly going to research more about them later.
Totally! I am happy to help. I also have to research more later cause there is still so much I don't know.
