  • In 1858 John Brown, an abolitionist, tried to start an uprising by wanting to attack the federal arsenal of Virginia and arm the slaves. But no slave joined him because they were afraid of the punishments.
  • Let's come together to make this country free for all people.
  • Time to raid the building.
  • John Brown got only 20 men to join him in the past two years. Then Brown along with his men attacked the arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia in hopes of a slave rebelion. This was known as the Raid on Harpers Ferry.
  • Local white Southerners fought back against Brown and his men. Eight of his men died and only three locals died. Due the circumstances, he decided to get his men and himself to retreat to a local firehouse.
  • QUICKLY! GET INSIDE!
  • Colonel Robert E. Lee was called in to capture John Brown and his men. His capture was a success after seconds of entering the building.
  • "Now, if it is deemed necessary that I should forfeit my life for the furtherance of the ends of justice, and mingle my blood...with the blood of billions this slave country whose rights are disregarded by wicked, cruel, and unjust enactments, I say, let it be done."
  • Brown and his men were sentenced to death. Knowing that he would be sentenced to death, Brown delivered a memorable speech.
  • December 2, 1859 John Brown's sentence was carried. After the events he was involved with, many people were concerned with their safety now.
