American Realism was a style in art, music and literature that depicted contemporary social realities, the lives and everyday activities of ordinary people.
Realism
Realism makes a meticulous use of exemplification, to show diverse profiles of themes, characters, situations and even places; the everyday and the non-exotic is the central theme.
The movement began as early as the 1830's but reached prominence and held sway from the end of the Civil War to around the end of the nineteenth century.
I am Stephen Crane.
American Realism began as a reaction to and a rejection of Romanticism, with its emphasis on emotion, imagination, and the individual. One of the most important representatives of this new movement was Stephen Crane
My works have been recognized for starting the literary movement of American realism
I was one of the most important realist writers in the United States

The writers of American realism show an immediate relationship between people and their economic and social environment, of which they are exponents.
. . . .
As I write, I capture and convey the fear, pain, dirt, arbitrariness, barbarism and death present in our world.
In fact, conveying all those elements was that I wrote ' The Red Badge of Courage ', my greatest work.
Stephen Crane's style is realistic, the impact he caused in his time made him a founder of this current within the American narrative and since then, he has been considered a defender of the common man, realist and symbolist.
