We conquered them and they didn't even see it coming!!!
Before the second Punic War started, a young Carthaginain military leader, named Hannibal, decided to take down Rome. He planned to walk with his military and elephants through the Alps and suprise the Roman's. A downfall to this plan was almost all of his elephants died before they suprised Rome. Prior to this mission, Hannibal had promised his dad he would take down Rome hence why he planned to attack them on a nice spring day.
Hannibal and the Carthaginians successfully suprised the Roman army after their long journey through the mountains. The Romans were not prepared for this attack which benefited the Carthaginains in their battle. This was the first time Carthage was close to defeating Rome. Until something happened.
Rome's allies arrived to the battlefield and helped Rome defeat Carthage. Out of this win, Rome gained allies, more power over Carthage, and a lot more land. This helped the Romans expand their country and military. The Carthaginains also had to pay large amounts of tax to the Romans.
