  • Nongqawuse,a 15 years old Xhosa girl, saw a man while scaring birds from the crops, and later she told her uncle about that man telling them to kill the cattle, which helps dead people come back to life. Her uncle, Mhalakaza, believed that it was his brother based on the appearance of that man.
  • Starve
  • Between 1856 and 1857, Xhosa people in Eastern Cape and Transkei slaughtered almost all of their cattle. This was an example of passive resistance in South Africa, which later carried into many resistances during the modern era. Nongqawuse and Mhalakza told their people that their dead ancestors would bring Zhosa back to its glory and kick the white men out of their land.
  • The big announcement
  • The new world is coming in 8 days, but I need your help
  • Mhalakaza met with the spirit himself this time and told everyone that the dead would arise the Xhosa nation again and bring them any kinds of animals that they want. Xhosa would be in their golden age
  • No more option
  • Xhosa's paramount chief Sarhili sent emissaries to the river, and they returned home convinced of the truth. Sarhili came out in support, and many more people started killing their cattle. Many didn't do it and didn't believe in this theory. The dead never came back to help them, and they began to blame the people who didn't kill their cattle
  • Why would they do it?
  • They tried to persuade the chief to stop killing the cattle, but no success at all. When hunger set in, people start blaming the unbelievers and plunder their farms without any help from the government
  • To make this happen, all Xhosa killing of cattle had to reach climax and on the 8th day, the sun will be red and there will be a storm bringing back the dead people. Nothing ever happened after 8 days
  • The Cape government started to recruit labor and thousands of Xhosa people got transferred into Cape. Xhosa people had to accept to work anywhere and any wages they were being paid. The Xhosa people didn't have any more options because they were in hunger due to their massive killing of cattle .
