Hello! My name is Sir Croaks-a-lot. Today I want to visit my friends, and invite them to my birthday party. I will be turning 10 years-old.
My first stop will be my friend, Sally the Bug. Let's hop on over to her right now!
Hi, Sally the Bug! How have you been?
Hello, Sir Croaks-a-lot. I have been feeling a bit worried lately.
If you look behind me, you can see a big ol' tree on the ground. It fell right between our bloom, and now I am worried if they will be okay.
I learned about an event like this in my science class!
This is known as a form of genetic drift. Random events can occur where the genes of the affected population can change drastically.
This specific genetic drift is known as the Bottleneck Effect. The genes of this population will be very different from the previous one. Instead of yellow ladybugs, we will see a lot of red ladybugs.
Since there are no red ladybugs in this population, the chances that there will be a red baby ladybug is very unlikely. But there will definitely be a lot of yellow baby ladybugs!
There is absolutely nothing to worry about, Sally the Bug. Your friends will be just fine!
Thank you, Sir Croaks-a-lot.
I have a question for you. Would you like to come to my birthday party today?
Of course! I would love to come, Sir Croaks-a-lot.
That's great to hear, Sally the Bug.
I will go catch up with the rest of the ladybugs.
Alright, see you later, Sally the Bug!
See ya!
Now, where is Jack the Rabbit? Oh, there he is!
Good afternoon, Jack the Rabbit. How have you been?
I have been great. I received some exciting news from my fellow rabbits.
As you can see, there are a bunch of chocolate colored rabbits, and not a single marshmallow colored one. Do you know why?
Hmm, why?
Because they went on a long, and exciting trip. I wished them the best of luck as I can't wait for their return!
I learned a little bit of this as well in my science class. This is another form of genetic drift, known as the Founder's Effect.
Although similar to the Bottleneck Effect, the Founder's Effect occurs based on colonization rather than catastrophe. Since Jack's marshmallow colored friends left on their adventure, their new colony will have less chocolate colored baby rabbits.
Did my information help you?
It sure did! Thanks a lot, Sir Croaks-a-lot!
I stopped by today to ask you a very important question. Would you like to come to my birthday party today?
I would be delighted to attend, Sir Croaks-a-lot!
See you then!
Goodbye, Jack the Rabbit!
Hi, Lola the Mice. How are you doing?
Hi, Sir Croaks-a-lot! I am feeling great!
Hmm, I happen to notice that your fur is lighter than some of your friends.
Oh, you're right! I never noticed it before.
Well, lucky for you, Lola, I happen to know a thing or two about this.
This process is known as Natural Selection. Populations of animals adapt and change, and individuals in a population are naturally variable. This means that they are all different in some ways.
Survival of the fittest is a simple way of describing how evolution works! Some animals are best adapted to their environment. Since Lola's fur is lighter, she is best adapted to her environment.
Do you understand why you are a lighter color now, Lola?
Yes, I do! Thank you so much, Sir Croaks-a-lot.
I want to ask you a quick question, Lola. Would you like to come to my birthday party today?
I would love to go, Sir Croaks-a-lot!
