  • The Book to Freedom.
  • By: Emily W. and Delina Y.
  • Welcome to Baltimore

  • I'm Frederick Douglass. I was born a slave on a plantation in Maryland. When I was about 7 or 8 I moved to my new slave masters Mr and Mrs. Auld.
  • Slave's aren't allowed to read or write!!!!
  • Mr and Mrs. Auld lived in a wealthy home in Baltimore. When I first arrived, they immediately treated me with more kindness then slave owners have ever done before because they had never owned slaves before. They even let me play with Tommy, their son.
  • I never learned how to read or write because I was a slave. Mrs. Auld taught me my ABC's. She would start and I would finish. I was new to this reading stuff but it was lots of fun!
  • Mrs. Auld and I went to show Mr. Auld what we had learned. We were expecting an applause and a big smile but we got yelling and a big frown instead. People all the way in Africa could hear his screams.
  • From then on the Aulds treated me with more hatred and coldness. They wouldn't let me read at all. So I secretly traded food with poor white boys in return for reading resources.
