- Hester Prynne is on trial for committing adultery. She just has a 3 month old baby named Pearl, and Hester refuses to name the father. As a punishment, she is forced to wear a letter "A" upon her bosom for the rest of her life
- Exposition
- Hester's husband, Roger Chillingworth has made it to Boston and is furious. He plans on finding out who Hester's love is so he can plot his revenge. Meanwhile, Arthur Dimmesdale is suffering so Chillingworth poses as a doctor to help him.
- Conflict
- When Pearl is 7, her and Hester meet again with Dimmesdale, after Dimmesdale's final sermo, they decide to run away to Europe. Dimmesdale becomes more sick day after day, and holds his hand to his heart as a sign of pain. Chillingworth finds out about this plan and books a ticket on the same ship as them.

- Dimmesdale delivers his sermon, many say its the best one he's ever given. He ends by calling Hester and Pearl up to the scaffold with him, he acknowledges his part in Hester's adultery, and all the guilt he has for not stepping forward as Pearl's father. He then opens his shirt and reveals a letter "A" engraved into his skin, and dies.

- The townspeople cannot believe what they saw. Some people deny a letter was on Dimmesdale's chest. Chillingworth dies within a year of Dimmesdale and leaves all his inheritance to Pearl, making her very rich. Pearl and Hester leave New England for Europe.

- After many years, Hester returns to Boston and lies in a little cottage her and Pearl once shared. She is still wearing a scarlet letter even though she doesn't need to. All the women in the twon go to her for advice, Hester is highly respected. she then dies and is burred next to Dimmesdale.
