  • In North America, the fur trade brought a great change. In Europe and Asia, there was a high demand for beaver and sea otter furs to make clothing.
  • Europeans came to North America to trade with the First Nations. They needed furs to survive and to make clothing for the winter.
  • First Nations, Metis and Inuit acted as guides and traded furs for European goods, like clothes, guns and metal.
  • First Peoples developed a common trading language with the Europeans. It was called Chinook and some words are still used today.
