  • First cells have to go through interphase. Here cells will go through three stages where they will grow and develop. DNA is duplicated here for the cell to be ready for mitosis.
  • Now the cell can perform mitosis. The first step of mitosis is prophase. In this stage the chromatin condenses and visible chromosomes are formed. Also, spindle fibers that will help later on in mitosis form and go to opposie sides of the cells and the nuclear membrane dissolves.
  • The second stage of mitosis is Metaphase. Spindle fibers attach to the chromosomes centromeres which then put the chromosomes into a line in the middle of the cell.
  • The third stage of mitosis is anaphase. There the chromosomes centromeres split as sister chromatids are pulled into opposite sides of the cells by spindle fibers. When the chromatids reach the poles they stop moving.
  • The final stage of mitosis is Telophase. Nuclear membranes form around the daughter chromosomes and nuclei are forming on each side for new cells to be made. After this the daughter chromosomes will unwind into chromatin.
  • But that makes no sense. There's still just one cell even though mitosis is done. Shouldn't there be two?
  • Don't worry! Even though the cell is done going through mitosis it still has to go through cytokinesis to complete cell division.
