  • After travelling over 24,000 km in 11 ships, the First Fleet arrived in Botany Bay, New South Wales, bringing an estimated 750 convicts and 500 crewmen with them.
  • We have found land.
  • When the British arrived in Australia, they were hoping to alleviate the overcrowding of British prisons back home. They didn't see anyone else on the land, so they claimed it as their own.
  • When the Indigenous Australians first encountered the British, they responded with acts of aggression, as they did not know who they were. This was in an attempt to make them leave and protect the land.
  • What are you doing here?
  • Even though they were aware of the Indigenous people on the land, they still claimed that it was 'Terra Nullius' (no man's land). They still colonised, bringing with them many diseases such as influenza, Smallpox and Measles.
  • The Australian Aboriginals were poorly treated, when they crossed paths with the British they were often killed and sometimes enslaved. The population of First Nations people decreased by around 90% just 10 years after the arrival of the British.

  • In 1976, the Aboriginal Lands Rights Act was passed by the Federal Government, which enabled First Nations people to claim land rights if traditional ownership were to be proven.
