At dawn on April 19th, some 700 British soldiers arrived in Lexington and approached 77 militiamen gathered in the town and demanded they put their hands up. The outnumbered militiamen had been ordered by their commander to disperse when a shot was fired. To this day we don't know what side fired first but it was enough for both sides to shoot at each other but when the smoke cleared 8 colonists lay dead and 9 more injured while only 1 British soldier was down but eventually American colonists won killing about 250 redcoats.
