The British celebrate Bonfire Night every year on 5 November in the memory of a famous event in British history, the Gunpowder plot.
November 1605, a group of Roman Catholics planned to blow up the House of Parliament while King James I was inside the building.
However, the evening before, Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellars with gunpowder, and the plot was discovered.
Guy Fawkes and Thomas Wintour were executed by hanging
Over four hundred years after the Gunpowder plot, we still remember how Guy Fawkes and his fellow plotters failed to blow up Parliament and kill King James I.
Nowadays everyone enjoys this festival. Some children make a figure of a man made of old clothes stuffed with newspaper or straw to represent Guy Fawkes. The figure is then burned on top of a bonfire on Bonfire Night. Fireworks are also present during this celebration,.
