  • " As a man sows, so shall he reap."
  • Summary: Ms. Prism tells Mr. Chassuble that Earnest deserved to die from a cold because he did bad things and Mr. Chassuble responds by saying that he gets sick by colds easily. Explanation: This is situational irony because Miss Prism says that Earnest deserved to die from a cold and Mr. Chassuble says that he gets affected by cold easily.
  • " Charity, dear Miss Prism, charity! None of us are perfect. I myself am peculiarly susceptible to draughts."
  • " You will marry me, won't you?"..." For the last three months?"
  • Summary: Algernon and Cecily are talking about there relationship when Algernon asks Cecily to marry him, but Cecily tells him that they have already been engaged for three months. Explanation: This dialogue is Dramatic irony because us as the reader know that Algernon is not really Earnest, but Cecily thinks she is engaged to Earnest.
  • "You silly boy! Of course. Why, we have been engaged for the last three months."
  • " Yes, you've wonderfully good taste, Ernest... And this is the box in which i keep all your dear letters." 
  • Summary: Cecily is complimenting Algernon disguised as Earnest when she tells her about the letters he wrote her but Algernon is confused as to what she is talking about. Explanation:  This dialogue is Dramatic irony because Algernon never wrote letters to Cecily because he is posing as Earnest and Earnest was the one who wrote them to her.
  • " My letters! But, my own sweet Cecily, I have never written you any letters." 
  • " But, my dear child, do you mean to say you could not love me if i had some other name?..." " Oh, any name you like- Algernon- for instance..." 
  • Summary: Algernon asks Cecily if she would ever love a man with a name other than Earnest an Cecily responds by saying no because she is already in love with a guy of the name Earnest. Explanation: This is verbal irony because Algernon is hurt that Cecily would not love a guy with a different name other than Earnest. This is ironic because Algernon's name is not really Earnest and he is not really in love with Cecily.
  • " But what name?..."" But I don't like the name of Algernon."
  • Summary: Cecily is telling Gwendolen how good they have gotten along after only knowing each other for a short period of time. Explanation: This Dialogue is Dramatic irony because we as the reader know that they are both in love with Earnest and they are getting along well.
  • " How nice of you to like me so much after we have known each other such a comparatively short time. Pray sit down."
