  • Thank You Ma'am
  • "Ordinary World" - Mrs. Jones has her purse stolen by Roger and is asked to give back her pocketbook. Roger is identifiable as a young, innocent-seeming boy and Mrs. Jones gives him one last shot to redeem himself. At the beginning of the story, both characters are easily described appearance-wise and the tone of the story gives the potential for Roger to redeem himself.
  • Call the Adventure - Instead of instantly getting mad at him, Mrs. Jones abruptly tells the boy to wash his wash by that evening and asks if he has any family. He says no, but in turn continues to talk to the lady and partake in what she could offer him, as he is slightly frightened. Roger was probably used to being ignored in the past, so talking to someone is definitely a call to adventure for him.
  • Refusal to Call - Although Roger wonders why Mrs. Jones is accepting him, he wonders if he could walk away and not take her advice. She even asks if he would run away to which he replies yes, but something is telling him that he should not anyways. He doubts whether he should stay with Mrs. Jones and almost refuses her call to adventure, but Mrs. Jones asks for him to not let that happen.
  • Meeting the Mentor - Given the chance of acceptance, Mrs. Jones handily takes Roger in as her metaphorical son and wants to teach him a lesson about what is right and wrong. Mrs. Jones then properly introduces herself as Roger is told to see her as a mentor. Through this point of action, Roger seems to have gotten rid of any doubts from which he had of Mrs. Jones.
  • Crossing the Threshold - While taken under the wing of Mrs. Jones, they both go to a large kitchen where Roger is told to wash his face. Roger commits to doing this task and wonders if he will go to jail. Mrs. Jones says that she would never turn him in, but warns him of doing something like this in the future.
  • Tests, Allies, Enemies - Knowing that Roger can redeem himself, Mrs. Jones asks Roger if he wants something to eat. She then explains that if he had stolen her pocketbook in the first place, she would not have any money to buy food, hence why treating others kindly is an important lesson. Although he does not want any food, he put to the challenge of being with Mrs. Jones while having no family at home.
