In the legend of, "The Corryvreckan Whirlpool" a Viking warrior, Breakan, fell in love with a young local girl while invading Scotland.
Breakan asked to marry the young girl. Her dad said he would consent if Breakan could pass a test. He would have to survive the whirlpool for three nights.
The whirlpool was know to the locals to have a strong and deadly force. They say that the witch, Cailleach, could turn plaid into pure white in three nights in the whirlpool.
Breakan created three ropes. The first rope was made of wool and was able to stand the force of the first night in the whirlpool.
The second rope was made of hemp. Just like the other one it was able to hold long enough for the whirlpool to calm and Breakan survived another night.
The final rope was made of women's pure hair. His true love even added her hair to the rope. Unlike the others this rope was unable to withstand the force of the whirlpool and the man was never seen again. Some say that the rope broke because some of the hair was impure.
