  • Exposition
  • Main Conflict
  • Rising Action
  • In To Build a Fire, the reader is first introduced to the man; a haughty fool that embarks on a trip through the Yukon to meet up with his friends. The man and his dog don't share a very mutualistic relationship, and this leads to many struggles down the road in the -75 degree weather.
  • Rising Action
  • The main conflict of the story revolves around the intelligence and endurance of man against the antagonist: nature. The unrelenting cold and snow constantly beats down the man in an attempt to prevent him from reaching his friends' cabin. His suffering is intensified further when he breaks through the ice into the freezing river.
  • Falling Action
  • In his panic, the man forgets to scrutinize the location of his fire for he is so desperate to thaw out his legs. He builds the fire beneath a snow covered tree, and as the dog gets warm from a distance, a gust of wind blows in.
  • Resolution
  • The wind disturbs and dislodges a mound of snow from the tree which promptly snuffs the man's fire and coats him in freezing snow. The man attempts to make a second fire but ultimately fails, leading him to try to attack and kill his dog to use his carcass for warmth.
  • The man fails to do that as well, and so he gives up. He begins to feel his body go numb and become one with the frozen ground while the dog is perched mockingly in front of him.
  • The man eventually dies, leaving the husky to complete the rest of the journey to the cabin on his own.
