Hoover' seriously not gonna help us out of this poverty! Him and this "rugged individualism"...
The introduction of Credit / Installment plans led to people buying items that would've been considered luxuries otherwise. Though, people ended up accumulating debt they couldn't pay back.
Hoovervilles
I'm in so much debt... No food... and I have to live in this run-down house. This is the "land of the free"?

FDR's Response
That Roosevelt guy sounded promising! Things are looking up!
Because of all the poverty, most had to make shantytowns that were called "Hoovervilles" because of Hoover's abstinence to helping the suffering Americans.
Bakeries were handing out free bread to the Americans that (obviously) needed it. Some didn't get any. It was only until supplies lasted. Which wasn't very long.
FDR's "New Deal" was meant to actually remedy the American's financial situations.
