  • Hi I'm King Henry VIII. This is my story about how I left the Roman Catholic Church and why I did it.
  • King Henry VIII was born on the 28th of June in 1491. He had 1 brother and 2 sisters.
  • This is my first marriage to Catherine of Argon. She's Arthur's widow (my older dead brother)...But I'm finally king.
  • 1509, Observant Friars outside Greenwich Palace

  • Catherine was unable to give Henry a male heir, only a daughter called Mary I. He was so upset he demanded a divorce.
  • 1533

  • I am not allowing you to divorce her! That is against our laws.
  • Let me divorce Catherine! She cannot give me an heir.
  • The pope refusing my divorce triggered me to leave the Roman Catholic Church and to create my own religion, where I am the ruler.
  • Let's call it... THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
  • 1534
  • In 1517, a German man called Martin Luther was one of the first people to question the Catholic Church's intentions. He pinned a letter to a door explaining his reasons. His actions motivated King Henry to discover and create his own religion.
  • 95 reasons why not to believe the Catholic Church:1. They are taking all your money.
  • As Supreme Head of the Church of England, this is what I decided to change and keep.
  • Differences Catholics believe in marriage being a sacrament, while Anglicans believe marriage is a ‘sacramental rite’.Catholic priests aren’t allowed to marry, Anglican priests are allowed to marry and have children. Catholic church ordains only men as priests, where Anglican's ordain women as priests and bishops as well.
  • Similarities Believing in the same God and that there is only one God. Recognising the 7 sacraments. Originating from the same ancient root. That Mary gave birth to Jesus as a virgin.
  • Some consequences I didn't really think about .....
  • ConsequencesHenry was a big fan of war, and imposed heavy taxes on his citizens. Monks, nuns and friars became homeless as they relied on the monasteries for support. Had 6 different wives, and only had 1 son. Monasteries were disbanded and henry claimed their income. It was used to fund wars and pay off debts.800 abbey and priory were dissolved, or forcibly closed.
  • After many years, in 1537 Henry finally received his long awaited heir. Edward was born from his 3rd wife, Jane Seymour.
  • Meet my son Edward
  • The king has officially destroyed all the monasteries and left thousands homeless and he takes of their money. He believes they must pay for the war and earn more money.
  • What has my life become. The king has kicked us out of our homes and we are homeless and disowned by our own country.
