  • At the beginning of the chapter, Scout and Jem say goodbye to Dill, who is heading home for school. They say bye to him as he leaves on a bus back to Meridian.
  • Scout has her first day of school and is escorted by Jem. Scout is really enthusiastic about her first day. Jem tells Scout to keep to the first grade, and not bother him at all.
  • Scout's first day of school doesn't start well. Her teacher, Miss Caroline Fisher, tells her not to have her dad read to her because she knows how to read before the rest of her classmates.
  • At lunch, all the kids get ready to go to town to eat or eat in school. A classmate of Scout's, Walther Cunningham, doesn't have his lunch because his family is super poor. Miss Caroline questions him when he doesn't agree to take her quarter.
  • Scout has a flashback to when Mr. Cunningham pays them back with firewood and food instead of money, and she asks Atticus about it, who says that that's the only way they could pay.
  • Then Scout tries to explain Walther Cunningham's situation, Miss Caroline, but she is uninformed on the goings-on in Maycomb, so she thinks Scout is being disrespectful and gets angry at her again, this time hitting her hand with a ruler.
