  • states' rights are the states' permission of power, but southern states abused this term by declaring states should be allowed to ignore the federal government's laws, and states' rights justifyed having slaves.

  • Sectionalism was the cause of 11 states seceding from the union. the reason the southern states seceded was because as one southern state gained its independence from the union the rest of the section did the same.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin
  • Election of 1860 showed the newly formed republican party from the north choosing a candidate in politics, while the south had two candidates they were divided with and because of this Abraham Lincoln was nominated by the republican party.

  • Tariffs made the south more spiteful of the north as exported and imported goods were more expensive, and the south exported goods to the U.K. all the time making tariffs a big problem to them.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin exposed the south for all the cruel acts done to slaves, and it was published to the north increasing abolitionist movements in the north.
  • Secession made tensions grow between the north and south. Basically the southern section left the union becoming the confederate states of america.
