About a year later, Dorothy decided to finally tell her best friend, Bernie. She told her to keep it a secret because the common practice at the time would force Dorothy to give up her job to either a single woman or an unemployed male. Bernice promised not to tell.

Dot's co-worker Nellie confronts her after work telling her she will report her to the boss because she overheard her say that she's married and that's not allowed. Dot is upset because she's afraid she will lose her job and she isn't even married to Paul yet.
Resolution
Two years later...
Dorothy tells Paul about what happened. He tells her not to worry, and that he'll talk to Nellie's boyfriend, John. Paul explains their situation and John promises that he will speak to Nellie.
I'm so sorry, I'm sure Nellie misunderstood what Dot said, I will speak to her and clear things up.
John tells Nellie that Dorothy and Paul both need their own jobs to support their parents and siblings and they can't afford to get married yet and she needs to mind her own business or their relationship is over.
