WHAT IS THIS?
JOHN LOCKE'S TREATISE
THIS IS THE SECOND TREATISE OF GOVERNMENT BY JOHN LOCKE
Jim stumbles around in the dark and comes across a small farm at the edge of town. Maybe there will be someone here who can help him!
WHY DO YOU HAVE A CROSS THEN?
JOHN LOCKE'S TREATISE
BECAUSE I ALSO BELIEVE IN GOD, AMEN!
Success! Jim meets a farmer named Patrick. Patrick feels sorry for Jim and invites him to the stay the night in his barn. Greatful, Jim agrees. He's made a friend!
JOHN LOCKE'S TREATISE
Once inside the barn, Jim sees a framed document. Patrick explains it as the "Second Treatise of Government" and introduces himself as an enlightened thinker. Enlightened thinkers are those who believe in the principles of the Enlightenment- a movement that advocated reason, liberty, progress, and sovereign power in the people. John Locke was a famous enlightened thinker who wrote the second treatise to emphasize that a government's power lay in its people. Patrick loved it so much, he had it framed.
Jim looks at the cross next to the treatise and becomes confused. He asks Patrick why he believes in god if he also believes in science and reasoning. Patrick further explains that along with the Enlightenment, the Great Awakening also occurred which emphasized religious devotion. Patrick tells Jim he is happy because everyone's love of god has brought them closer as a country.
Suddenly, Jim and Patrick are interrupted by a loud commotion outside. What in tarnation could be happening?
