A hundred years ago lived Taniwha, protector of the Rakaia River bank. Taniwha loved how clean the lake was and he would chase fish with his sharp white claws.
Taniwha had a great life in the bank. There were fish to hunt, the sun was shinning on him and he felt great watching the toi toi go back and forth.
But one day the NW wind decided to come and blow all the rubbish off the land into the Rakia River bank killing fish so he couldn't chase them.
Taniwha begged the wind to stop. The wind stoped but then just blew even harder turning the water green from all the rubbish. Next to Taniwha stood a tower of rubbish.
Taniwha decided to take matters into his own hands he built a dam.Tired he went in the hot pools. A few seconds after he went in, the wind arrived and he was angry. He blew a hole in the dam. The water poured out like crazy. Taniwha was devastated at what he was looking at. The wind won.
How the Rakia george was made and why you dont litter. Keep the rivers clean.
