  • Democritus
  • This substance can be broken down no further! I present the atomos
  • John Dalton
  • These to atoms are similar, watch them repel!
  • By: Adam Braim
  • Michael Faraday
  • This atom has an electrical charge.
  • Democritus was a Greek philosopher who was the first to develop the Atomic Theory. He discovered this in 450 B.C.E. by testing at what point does a substance become uncuttable, which he referred to as "atomos"
  • JJ Thomson
  • Observe... the raisin bun model
  • This theory was left almost completely ignored until the mid 17th century, when John Dalton stated that similar atoms repel from each other, and also that they were invisible to the naked eye.
  • Ernest Rutherford
  • The centre of the atom is where most of the weight comes from.
  • About 50 years after John Dalton, Faraday came up with the idea that atoms had an electrical particle. He also showed how compounds were created.
  • In 1897, Thomson discovered the electron, and that the particles are smaller than the atom they are in.
  • Rutherford discovered that most of an atom is empty space. He also found the nucleus, and found that most of mass was located there.
