  • Our story begins on the Indus river, where numerous cities and civilizations began popping up after about 3300 BCE. The river provided fertile soil, useful for farming and agriculture, producing enough food to feed larger and larger populations. The types of crops typically grown in this time where wheat, barley, and peas.
  • These civilizations collectively became to be known as the Indus River Valley Civilizations. The first was the Harappan, which continued until about 1300 BCE.
  • Out of these groups that conquered the Indus River Valley, the Aryans were by far the most important. The Aryans are the group known by many to have wrote the Vedas, a collection of short stories and teachings that later founded the Hindu religion. That religion spread very quickly thought the Indus River Valley and beyond. Within it, a social hierarchy emerged.
  • This social hierarchy is called the caste system. It is still around today. Within this system the two highest castes lived in elaborate homes and palaces. These two castes are the Brahmans (the priests) and the Kshatriyas (the warriors).
  • The two lower castes of the social hierarchy are the Vaishyas (merchants and farmers) and the Shudras (servants and workers). There was and still is a large social disparity between these two castes and the higher ones. Both of these castes lived in smaller huts/houses and were hardly paid, if paid at all. Some groups of the Shudras were known as the Dalits or "untouchables". This label meant that they were regarded as inferior to all other castes and heavily discriminated against. This still happens today.
