  • Last week my students were working in groups on a project and I had a situation with two students. Eva was working with Sam, and he was not doing his part.
  • Let us sit and talk this through.
  • Why bother when my ideas don't count. She is so focused on the guidelines.
  • Sam is refusing to adhere to the guidelines of the project. I told him to re-do it correctly. Now he is mad and refusing to help.
  • Exactly. And you did well by having a conversation with both students. It brought them to an understanding, as well as to respect each others ideas.
  • Sam fits the description of the creative underachiever. He does not like restrictions to his creativity. He has something unique to add to the project, but Eva has rejected it.
  • Eva is a perfectionist, while Sam is does not like limits to be placed on what he can do. I try to provide an environment where all my students can thrive regardless of their differences.
  • Wow, that was handled well. Eva was encouraged to take a risk with Sam's idea and Sam to add his unique touch. It pays to have some flexibility in the classroom.
  • Eva, let Sam add his unique style to the project. Remember, those are guidelines for your final project. Sam be mindful of Eva's ideas as well.
