It's twelve noon, The house "had shut up its windows and drawn shades in an old-maidenly preoccupation with self-protection which bordered on a mechanical paranoia." It then recognized the dog's voice and let it inside. The dog was starving and couldn't reach any food which led to it passing away. The robot mice then cleaned up the mess by putting the dog in the incinerator. "Behind it whirred angry mice, angry at having to pick up mud, angry at inconvenience." Personification: The mice are given human emotions.
"I recognize that voice, it's the dog."
"Who goes there? What's the password?"
The fire must be put out quickly!
"At ten o'clock the house began to die." A gust of wind pushes a branch through the window pushing a cleaning bottle onto the stove causing a fire to start. "The house tried to save itself." Personification: The house is shown as a living thing that can die from the fire, hence it tries to save itself reacting like a human would.
"Fire! Fire! Fire!"
Water rats attempted to kill the fire by pistolling their water while the house let down mechanical rain. "Heat snapped mirrors like the first brittle winter ice." Simile: The heat shattering and snapping the mirrors is compared to the snapping of the first brittle winter ice. The fire overcame the house's failed attempts at saving itself and consumed it. Up until the last instant, voices could be heard, oblivious, announcing the time, opening the door, a thousand things were happening.
Emergency! Fire! Everybody needs to run!
"Help, help! Fire! Run, run!"
