- This is significant because he was the king of the Franks empire from 771 to 814. He expanded the empire, helped spread Christianity, and built schools throughout his empire. All of his work resulted in an organized emperor, until his death when everything was divided.
- A series of invasions hit Europe from 800-1,000, after Charlemagne's death. They were led by Vikings, Muslims, and Magyars. The significance is that due to the many attacks, kings couldn't protect their people.
- Since the kings couldn't protect their people, the citizens turned to the nobles. This is significant because that's when Feudalism and Manorialism started. Lords gave land to knights in exchange for protection, and lords also gave housing to peasants/serfs in exchange for farming.
