Dear king of UK, your people had been causing trouble in our land, please advise them or we will show no mercy. From the Rangatiras of Aotearoa
Oh no!
1831 -13 Rangatira's write to the king from the bay of islands. This is mainly for protection agaisnt the French but was also due to their concerns about the lawlessness of the british sealers and traders.
I think this is the so called Aotearoa.
Who dat
1833 -James Busby, the first British resident to NZ arrives at New Zealand. He had no military or police force to assist him so he had to do everything through agreements and discussions
1834 -United Tribes flag chosen. This is important as the flag allows Maori to trade outside of New Zealand as it had been formally recognised by the outside world and the British king.
I shouldn't have partook on this.
Brit-ish people are wierd, Kid, don't look at him laugh like a mad man
1835 -He whakaputanga (Declaration of independence) Declared. This is an official document and was signed by 34 northern chiefs.
He whakaputanga (The declaration of independence)
Between 1835 to 1839 -The document was passed all over the North Island to be signed. By 1839, there are about 52 signatures. This includes the first Maori king, Te Wherowhero.
Are we there yet?
1839 -More signatures are added and many trade such as weapons to food are made.
Thanks for the trade!!!
