"Samuel"By Grace Paley
EXPOSITION
Four boys, Alfred, Tom, Samuel, and Calvin are on their way to the missile exhibit on the fourteenth street. The boys "are jiggling on the swaying platform" (Paley paragraph 2). However, the women looked at the four boys in displeasure and one of them "wanted to get up and say, be careful you dumb kids, get off that platform or I'll call a cop" (Paley paragraph 4).During the ride, as the train accelerated the boys would "raise their hands and point them up to the sky to act like rockets going off, then they rat-tat-tatted the shatterproof glass pane like machine guns" (Paley paragraph 6).
RISING ACTION
As the train unknowingly began to quickly slow down, the boys would "jerk forward and backward and grab the swinging guard chains" (Paley paragraph 7). One woman could no longer take the boys behavior and shouted "You boys will be hurt. You'll be killed. I'm going to call the conductor if you don't just go into the next car and sit down and be quiet," one boy replied "Yes'm" before they all burst into laughter (Paley paragraph 7 and 8).
CLIMAX
While laughing they "began to pound each other's back. Samuel laughed the hardest and pounded Alfred's back until Alfred coughed and the tears came" (Paley paragraph 9). One man angrily stood up and pulled the emergency cord causing "people standing in the most secure places [to fall] forward, then backward" (Paley paragraph 10). Samuel having let go of the chain from laughter "pitched only forward and [fall] head first to be crushed and killed between the cars" (Paley paragraph 10).
FALLING ACTION
After the train's sudden stop, the conductor called "for the trainmen who knew about this kind of death and how to take the body from the wheels and brakes" (Paley paragraph 11). Meanwhile the women "waited around wondering if he might be an only child" as the boys "stayed close to each other, leaning and touching shoulders and arms and legs" (Paley paragraph 12).
RESOLUTION
The policemen arrived at Samuels house and inform his parents of his death, Samuel's mother "screamed all day and moaned all night, though the doctors tried to quiet her with pills" she would never her Samuel back again (Paley paragraph 13). As time passed, Samuel's mother grew pregnant and had another baby boy, but "immediately she saw that this baby wasn't Samuel. She and her husband together have had other children, but never again will a boy exactly like Samuel be known" (Paley paragraph 14).
