Hi Mom, Do you know what changes will happen on the physical appearance and color of an apple sliced in half with or without the presence of the oxygen?
Not really Brett, but I love to find out! That sounds interesting!
OK!, I'm excited!
Sure I'll show you Mom, I learned it in my Science class earlier. Let's go to the kitchen.
Ok, I will slice it for you since the knife is very sharp you may get hurt
Alright, Mom the first thing that we need to do is to slice the apple into half and let it be exposed to air and the other 1/3 let us put it inside a container
Brett, the other half that was exposed to air turned into brown
After 5 Minutes
Yes Mom, then the other slice that we kept in the container is still red in color
So Brett what part of the apple was placed inside the container?
Yes, this was so much fun, I wish we could do this again!
Yes, I remember now, What part of the apple were unused?
1/3 of the remaining half of the sliced apple was placed inside the container Mom.
Absolutely Mom, I would love to do this again with you!
2/3 of the remaining half of the sliced apple were unused.
That's great baby, you look really excited telling me all this, I bet you are enjoying your Science class so much
Wow! That's great baby, you are really a keen observant
I noticed that apples turn brown when exposed to air because of the oxidation process that goes on when the inside of the apple gets exposed to the ambient air which contains oxygen and water molecules
I also learned that to keep apples from browning what we need to do is to reduce or eliminate the apple's exposure to air after it's been cut
