- After the American Revolution ended, the American economy was incredibly poor. Farmers during the war lost their crops and items to soldiers (which stole them for personal gain). The government, in debt, raised taxes. In rural Massachusetts, debtors seized farms and possessions of farmers that could not pay their debts.

- The farmers, understandably unhappy, began to protest and show their unhappiness in various ways. They closed courts and liberated debtors from jail. Later, under a farmer named Daniel Shays, the farmers revolted in full power.
