Stalin gave little to no reaction to Trumans annocunemt in postdam. he saw the detotnation of both bomvs on japan as a direct threat to the USSR. stalins rection to this was to force USSR scientists to rush and develop their own atomic bomb. while also detaning east germany scientists for help as well.
1945-1963 the use of the atomic bomb in the begining of the cold war
while the leader and others involved in the manhattan project determined if there was a future for the atomic bomb, as well as review the devastating effects of said bomb, the USSR were using espionage to learn and develop their own atomic bomb. stalin worked the scientist hard and used every resource he could to develop a bomb. it was later found out in 1949 on august 29 the USSR was found detonating a atom bomb in the semipalatinsk desert in Kazakhstan.
how it couldve been different
american exceptionalism led to the original ideas that caused the cold war. is claimed to be because the USA wanted to expand overseas. there was also a fear of communism and since the USA is anti communist, they "had to intervine" in the affairs of the USSR. basically saying this was a main cause for the cold war, which is mostly americas fault.
how it couldve been different continued
the atomic bomb was used in the beginning of the cold war as a way to deter communism in enemy territory as well as intimidate any enemy of the US and force a surrender from japan. there was also hopes in negotiations with the USSR.
if the USSR developed the bomb first, then the USA wouldve most likely followed along USSR's footsteps. They would engage in an arms race similiary to how the USSR did during the cold war, to develop our own bomb. This would continue until tensions rose past a boiling point or if a mutual agreement between the USSR and USA happened to avoid another world war.
if neither side didnt develop the bomb then eventually one of them would due to the future actions of either rival. it was only a matter of time before one country develops one which all depends on who, what, and why.
