Lincoln won the election with 40% of the popular votes and won all of the northern states.

Many people wanted to preserve the Union with a series of amendments (that weren't passed) to save slavery south of the 36, 30-degree line.

Many southerners welcomed secession. However, some were worried about the destruction of their beautiful country.
Lincoln had won but was not yet elected. James Buchanan said that they had no right to secede. Lincoln was inaugurated on March 4, 1861.
