- Hello, we are red blood cells. Nice to finally meet you! If you think we look weird, we really don't, we look like squashed basketballs. Hemoglobin, a type of protein, makes up the majority of a red blood cell (RBC). In the lungs, hemoglobin absorbs oxygen and transports it to the rest of the body. We actually only have a 120-day lifespan. Don’t worry that you are going to run out of us because RBCs are the largest type of blood cell that you have. We are little circular cells that help create a brief patch in an injury, which stops the bleeding. Technically, we are the cells that "help your blood harden" when you get cut and start bleeding.
