Understanding the point of view and feelings of each character is very important when reading Wonder. The author uses different characters' points of view to show readers how Auggie affects people in different ways. For each of the characters (for whom a chapter is named and from whose point of view in which it is written), list his or her relationship to Auggie, his or her traits, whether or not YOU believe he or she is kind (and why), and a quote by the character that backs that up.

Student Instructions
Create a character map for the major characters.
When studying characters, you need to help students understand how all the secondary characters relate to the main character. Each person's point of view will affect how they interact with the main character.
Once you help students understand point of view, get specific by deciding how each character is kind to Auggie in the story. The more specific students are the better.
Finally, help students to visualize the characters more clearly by creating a storyboard. Pictures, color choice, and descriptions can show the relationships between the characters clearly.
Trying to understand a character's feelings when reading a story will help you to understand his or her motivations in the story. Why do they do what they do? Because of how they feel about the people and happenings going on around them.
Each character has their own point of view about other characters in the book and what is happening in the story. When you investigate the characterization, who characters are in relation to others characters and what their point of view is will make a big difference to the story and help you to understand character motivations.
Especially in a story with many characters, it can get confusing to understand who is who. A visual representation of the characters will help a reader to understand more clearly who is in the book and how they are related.
