A fun way for students to express their understanding of a story, its themes, and main characters, is to create a movie poster. As students read Lord of the Flies, they may find particular themes or images stand out to them. Have students create a movie poster, complete with a title, casting, and an image that conveys important information from the story.
When students complete their posters, they can be printed out and hung in the classroom. For additional templates to add to this assignment, check out our movie poster templates!

Student Instructions
Create a movie poster that evokes the theme, story, and other relevant information about Lord of the Flies.
Explain to the students the objectives of performing this activity and making a movie poster. Tell them the necessary and additional elements they can use in their movie posters and what they can achieve by performing this activity. Once the objectives are clear, students will know exactly what they should work towards.
Carefully read the story and ask the students to identify as many themes as they can from their understanding. Students can list down these themes for discussion later and create distinctions for major and minor themes used in the story.
Organize a class discussion for the students to present their opinions on themes. Encourage the students to discuss and analyze the themes in detail and build on the perspectives of other students. After this discussion, ask the students to pick a specific theme which they find the most interesting and think it represents the crux of the story accurately.
After students have selected one theme for their movie posters, ask them to conduct some research on that central idea and analyze the use of that theme in the context of the story. Students can also identify which characters and settings are specifically connected to this theme and how students can represent the essence of this theme using a tagline.
Encourage the students to use accurate and interesting visuals for their movie posters. Students can recreate a scene from the story that depicts their chosen theme as well and aligns with the story.
A "Lord of the Flies" movie poster should normally incorporate the title, an arresting image or imagery that captures the island location or characters, pertinent taglines, and the names of the director and star actors. Students can also add some fun and creative elements of their own and get some inspiration from their favorite movie posters.
Strong graphics on the poster might include images like the conch shell, the severed pig's head ("Lord of the Flies"), and the island itself. These symbols have a profound meaning in the book. Students can choose the images they want on the poster based on their selected theme, their center of focus, and how they would like to present the story to the audience.
