Activity Overview

Classroom community is essential, especially when students are learning to communicate in a new language. In this activity, students will share about themselves in an All About Me spider map as they practice English! They will create illustrations and descriptions to answer the prompts about themselves: their name, favorite subject in school, family, favorite animal, favorite color and favorite book. Teachers can include more than one template and customize the prompts to fit their students needs and interests. After students are done, they can present to the class or a small group.

How to Use 'All About Me' Spider Maps for Self-Introduction in ESL Classes

1

Introducing the Concept of 'All About Me' Spider Maps

Begin by explaining what spider maps are and how they can be used for self-introduction. Illustrate with an example spider map that includes categories like hobbies, family, favorite things, etc. Discuss how each arm of the spider map relates to different aspects of personal information.

2

Brainstorming Personal Information

Guide students in brainstorming information about themselves for each category of the spider map. Encourage them to think about their interests, family background, likes and dislikes, goals, and any other personal attributes they would like to share. Provide vocabulary support as needed, especially for beginner-level students.

3

Creating the 'All About Me' Spider Maps

Distribute materials for creating the spider maps (paper, markers, colored pencils). Instruct students to represent each category with a separate arm on the map and add corresponding details. Encourage creativity in their illustrations and design.

4

Presenting and Sharing the Spider Maps

Invite students to present their 'All About Me' spider maps to the class. This can be done in small groups or in front of the entire class, depending on the class size and student comfort levels. Encourage the audience to ask questions after each presentation to foster interaction and practice speaking and listening skills.
