- This is Adeline's family. They are rich and have a big house. The older lady is Niang, Adeline's stepmother. Adeline's real mother had passed away during childbirth therefore her family do not care for her and believe she's bring bad luck and is a curse. Everyone except for her Ye Ye, Aunt Baba and Nai Nai. Nai sadly passed away though.
- Adeline's family moved houses to Shanghai therefore Adeline had to move to a different school. She had to move away from all her friends and away from all the memories she had in Tianjin.
- At Adeline's new school she gets class president so her friends follow her home to surprise her. Niang doesn't approve and thinks Adeline invites her friends over when she isn't allowed to. So Niang takes Adeline to another room and beats her.
- Because of what happens with Adeline's friends Adeline is sent to boarding school. At boarding school you never got eggs unless someone from your household sent in some for you so obviously Adeline didn't get any. But one day while the teacher was calling out names for people who got eggs Adeline's name was called.
- At boarding school Adeline heard about a play writing competition. She wrote a play and submitted it but soon after she submitted it she got news that her Ye Ye passed away. It was because of Ye Ye that Adeline even wrote the play. Later one Adeline was sent home and her father wanted to see her. He had told her that she won the play writing competition and had told her that he was proud of her. She had never heard these words come from his mouth.
- Later on Adeline somehow convinced her father to let her go to university in England with third brother.
