  • Good night everyone. Welcome to Mental and Physical Health storyboard discussion panel. I'm your host Maureen. We have a special discussion on Mental Health this evening. This panel have two segments. Here with us is General Practitioner Dr. Sigmund Scott and Psychiatrist Dr. Ebony Grant. I want to thank them for giving us their time today, but I do want them to start off with some introductions.
  • MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH STORYBOARD DISCUSSION PANEL
  • Good night. And thank you for having me on this panel. My name is Dr. Sigmund Scott, I'm the founder of St. Jude's Children Hospital. I also run a non-profit fundraiser for homeless and Mental Health Awareness.
  • Thank you for having me on this panel Maureen. So I'm Dr. Ebony Grant a Psychiatrist for 40 years at my private firm Ebony & Co. Psychotherapy Firm.
  • Kindly give Dr. Grant and Dr. Scott a big welcome. I want to start off with you explaining the terminology comorbidity.
  • MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH STORYBOARD DISCUSSION PANEL
  • Yes you can answer Dr. Grant, but I also wish to add that comorbidity comes in the form of substance abuse, anxiety, obesity, post traumatic stress disorder, diabetes, depression, high blood pressure, cancer and psychiatric disorders just to name a few. There are several psychosocial explanations for comorbidity. These includes, early exposure to violence, growing up in environments where affection and caring is lacking, substance misuse by parents, intense and continuous exposures to stress and a lack of social networks. (Aguilar-Gaxiola & Gullotta, 2008).
  • I would like to answer this question Dr. Scott. I can remember reading the American Psychopathological Association 2007 it was cited that in 1967 Feinstein was the one who postulated that comorbidity is the coexistence of two or more diseases, conditions or clinical entities in the same individual. So to break it down Maureen in other words, when there is the presence of a disease or condition that coincides with another illness or condition in one person, it is said that comorbidity exists within that person.
  • WOW!! that was a mouth full of information on that tiny word comorbidity..............Our next question is, can you please identify the three causes of Bi-polar disorder?
  • MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH STORYBOARD DISCUSSION PANEL
  • I didn't even know that diabetes was a cause for bi-polar disorder. I only knew about depression and stress.
  • One of the biggest causes of bi-polar disorder is diabetes. People living with diabetes stand a higher risk of getting bi-polar disease than the rest of the population. abnormal changes in the blood sugar causes rapid changes in patient's mood swings. They may develop other mental-related symptoms such as fatigue, trouble thinking clearly, and a lot of anxiety.
  • Dr. Scott I know this information can save a life. Anyone who is out there battling with Bi-polar disorder and was later diagnosis with diabetes, stress or depression. Book a doctor appointment for your family, love one or friend and seek medical answers.
  • MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH STORYBOARD DISCUSSION PANEL
  • Dr. Scott thanks for the information. Everyday we learn something new.
  • Yes Dr. Grant the two other causes of bi-polar disorder are depression and stress. Bi-polar is a mental illness disease, as is depression. People who suffer from depression express a high rate of on and off mood swings, sometimes they feel sad, sometimes they feel overjoyed, and occasionally hopeless or lack of interest. Stress and depression can sometimes be caused by physical health or mental health.
  • Yes, yes, yes Dr. Grant we do learn something new everyday. Our next question is for you doctors, Can you discuss three ways to improve the overall health of the citizen in St. Kitts and Nevis.
  • MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH STORYBOARD DISCUSSION PANEL
  • Did you know out of my 40 years of being a psychiatrist. I actually worked in St. Kitts and Nevis for at least five years before I left and move to America to start my journey. I can definitely give you three ways in which they can improve their overall health. 1. In St. Kitts and Nevis the nurses and doctors need to enhance their medical training and education. 2. They need to upgrade their medical machine and introduce new technology which can help patients with different diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart diseases and more. 3. They also need to implement a mobile medical station for people who don't mobility so they can have a fair chance to obtain proper medical care.
  • I also travelled to St. Kitts and Nevis as well. That's where I met Dr. Grant after she completed my leadership course which was provided for the doctors at the hospital.
  • MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH STORYBOARD DISCUSSION PANEL
  • I never visited St. Kitts and Nevis but it sounds like my next destination for my vacation. Let me conclude by thanking both of our members of the panel Dr. Grant and Dr. Scott. I thought their was really excellent insights onto the questions that were raised. Stay tuned for our second segment on where we will be speaking on psychotropic drugs with Dr. Grant and Dr. Scott. Goodnight guys and have a splendid night and don't forget you can contact Dr. Ebony Grant on www.Ebony&Co.Psychotherapy Firm.com and Dr. Sigmund Scott on www.SigmundScottst.judeshospital.com.
